“Angela Davis.”

I approached the “Angela Davis” quote part of the portrait a bit differently than the previous “Women” series portraits. Usually, I create a background image with a quote as a digital image in Photoshop. I then print the background, cure it, and adhere the background image to a canvas panel and then paint the portrait. Well, that whole process is time-consuming and tedious. This week I just wanted to get straight to painting Ms. Davis’s portrait! So, I left a space on the canvas to adhere Ms. Davis’s typeset quote. I’m not sure how this will work out, hopefully, it will look the way I have it in my head! It’s almost impossible for me to hand-letter a quote on the canvas because I use slow-drying oil paints and well I am terrible at handwritten printing! So, we’ll see how adhering the typeset quote to the canvas works out!

“Elephant Love.”

For some time, I have had in my head that I wanted to paint an elephant! Upon researching about a gazillion rights-free photos of elephants, I decided on a reference photo from Unsplash by Craig Pretorius. Elephants are fascinating creatures. So prehistoric looking! All those wrinkles! And so social and smart! Several years ago I read two great books (fiction) with elephants as main characters. “Water for Elephants.” by Sara Gruen and “Leaving Time.” by Jodi Picoult. If you need a good read, I recommend both books!

I only had time to paint one of the elephants in my composition. I am happy so far. I’m having lots of fun with the color of the elephant’s skin and all the “stuff” on their skin! Ha! All those wrinkles!
