Women's History Month - Week #1

Billie Holiday

Marilyn Monroe

Happy March 2021!

I’m not gonna say it in so many words. But, let’s all hope March 2021 is the beginning of a bright and healthy future!

March is Women’s History Month.

Like Black History Month, it’s sad to me that society declares one month a year to honor female folks. But, it is a thing, so I will take the opportunity this month to draw a few women that I admire and respect.

This week I made charcoal portraits of Billie Holiday and Marilyn Monroe. On the surface, they appear total opposites, but I think they are similar women of strength, talent, and beauty.

I always research my subject and I learned a lot about both women. Did you know Billie Holiday was born in Philadelphia and wrote “God Bless the Child! Did you know Marilyn Monroe was an avid reader and won a Golden Globe?

I hope you enjoy the portraits of Billie Holiday and Marilyn Monroe. The portraits are charcoal on Canson XL Recycled Paper. The charcoal drawings are preserved with archival fixative so the surface does not smear or get damaged. Available for sale!

Enjoy your week! Think of all the women throughout history who have added to our lives.

Let me know if there is a woman you would like me to add to my drawings this month!
