New Series - Women Who Shatter Barriers

The Story of "Women Who Shatter Barriers"  -  Maya Angelou

2018 is the Year of Women. So...to build on that momentum, I am creating mixed media portraits of woman I admire for their courage, brilliance and heart.

Maya Angelou is the third in my portrait series. (via my daughter's request for this portrait of the incomparable Maya Angelou). 

"I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." - Maya Angelou

"I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," her deeply inspirational and personal account of childhood and young adult experiences catapulted Angelou to fame. My personal favorite Maya Angelou poem is "Phenomenal Woman."

Angelou's list of artistic achievements is too long for me to list here. For me personally though, I believe Angelou's work profoundly crosses racial, economic, and educational boundaries. She was a leader in the Civil Rights movement, she collaborated with Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. Angelou recited her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" (1993) at President Bill Clinton's inauguration. In 2011, President Barack Obama presented Angelou with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Angelou reached astounding personal, social and artistic heights. She blasted through each and every barrier society threw at her with creativity and brilliance.

My Multi-media Process

I create the background images of the portaits digitally with photoshop. I then print, adhere, and prime the background on a 8x10 inch canvas panel. I paint the subject of the portrait with oil paint over the primed background. I varnish the entire painting when the painting is completely dried and cured.

I use the highest quality artist oil paint and varnish. The original multi-media painting arrives at your home framed and ready to hang.

I take every step to ensure the image is as accurate as possible to the original painting. However variations in color may occur due to monitor differences.
