Yes, this is an actual Cigar Shop in Old Havana, Cuba! We visited in November 2017 prior to the US travel ban. Old Havana is lovely, the people are lovely! I finally made this painting!

The Story of "Sidewalk Drawing'
As I explore the people and places around me, I look for moments of joy and sometimes sorrow. When I noticed the kids having fun with sidewalk chalk on this mid-summer day, I knew I had to capture this moment.
The girls are focused on creating an image with their chalk, the boys are creating games with their chalk. The adults are oblivious to the activity around them and are engrossed in their devices.
As I made this painting, I became more and more involved in the contrasting characters. The adults are enjoying some time to themselves on a beautiful summer afternoon. The kids are having creative fun. And, the thing I love most is how everyone is enjoying the day in their own way.
I hope the characters in this painting can transport you to a summer place of mind, and enjoy the painting as much as I enjoyed creating it!

“Chestnut Hill Cheese Shop”
The Chestnut Hill Cheese Shop and its iconic YELLOW AWNING have been part of the Philadelphia Chestnut Hill Neighborhood’s walkable downtown for 54 years. In October 2019, the founding owners decided to close up shop and head into retirement I hope my painting of the beloved Cheese Shop keeps its memory alive for all the folks that enjoyed its friendly service and delectable dairy delights over the years.

The Story
The springtime light at Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia is beautiful & warm. At dusk, the light is even more distinctive with the strong warmth of the light reflecting off the surrounding buildings. This painting takes place on a Friday evening around dusk. Folks are relaxing, buskers are busking, parents are playing with their kids, dogs are getting exercise with their owners. The young woman in this painting is zoned into a tranquil, concentrated state of mind as she twirls her "hoops" to the music in her headphones. In case, you haven't seen anyone "hooping" yet, this woman is combining dance with gymnastic moves on this lovely Friday evening. Young kids and their parents are enjoying her graceful dance movements with every spin and twirl of her hoops.

The Story of "Laugh Now"
"Laugh Now" depicts a room of paintings by the Street-Art legend Banksy. Located in the Modern Contemporary (Moco) Museum in Amsterdam, the room I depict in the painting is one of several with the "Laugh Now" theme.
If you are a fan of Banksy, the Moco is the place for you. The collection is a private initiative by the owners to showcase modern and contemporary art. The owners have given Banksy the unauthorized exhibit he deserves with a vast number of Banksy's activist paintings, indoor art, and of course, his outdoor art. This museum is a special treat to see so many Banksys in one location. It also doesn’t hurt that this museum is located in Amsterdam!
"Laugh Now." The Big Idea. I enjoy depicting the subject, "Looking at art," in my paintings. Or, this case, not looking at art! Using the power of Banksy's art as a backdrop in my composition, I believe Banksy would enjoy the irony of this painting. Here is room full of his paintings, yet the visitors are more absorbed in reading about the impact of Banksy's street stencils than actually looking at them!
What Should You Do. Please go look at some art. Not just my art, but any kind of art. Get crazy, look at art that is new to you. Look at art that you are familiar with. Use art to understand the crazy world in which we live. Use art to appreciate the most important art of all, the art of being human. The Story
The folks in this painting are enjoying a warm summer afternoon. One of the few days during the summer of 2016 that were not scorching hot.
I always look for a story to paint and this day I fell in love with how a little girl and her mom were enjoying the musician strumming his guitar. While the little girl enjoys & interacts with the musician's guitar, the young man with headphones is immersed in his mobile device and ignores the live music and activity around him.
That's how it goes, beautiful public spaces to be enjoyed by everyone!

The Story of "Diana"
If you have visited the Philadelphia Museum of Art you have definitely seen “Diana.”
PMA tells the history of Diana as follows:
Diana has reigned as the goddess of the Museum’s Great Stair Hall ever since 1932!
Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the most celebrated American sculptor of his day, created “Diana” as a weathervane for the tower of the first Madison Square Garden in New York in 1893. Madison Square Garden was demolished in 1925 and the Philadelphia Museum of Art adopted the sculpture in 1932.
As a long-time member of the PMA, I especially appreciate Diana’s presence while enjoying live music, snacks and drinks on Friday evenings relaxing on the stairs for the Museum's “Art After Five” program.
“Diana” is one of the paintings in my series “Celebrating Famous Art.” I painted “Relaxing with Rothko,” from a visit to the Tate Modern in London and ““Laugh Now, Banksy in Amsterdam.” from a visit to the MOCO Museum in Amsterdam. Visiting art museums has always been a passion of mine, so, every once in a while I feel driven to pay homage!
I hope you enjoy "Diana on the Stairs" as much as I enjoyed creating it.
