The Story of “The Philly Naked Bike Ride.”
I hope you enjoy this painting and think about how we are all very different in mind and body. Let’s try to forget our pre-conceived notions of each other. These folks had the courage to ride around the city without the protection of clothing. Maybe we can all find the courage to look at ourselves and others with respect.
Philly folks may recognize the setting of this painting at the corner of 16th & Locust Streets. The day is September 9, 2017. The event is The Philly Naked Bike Ride!
Yes, this is an annual event organized by PNBR about riding together to promote fuel conscious consumption, positive body image, and cycling advocacy. Everyone is encouraged to ride along and bring your own message! No registration is necessary. Just show up clothed or not!
My photo reference for this painting is by our niece, Lannie Le. She posted the photo on FB in 2017. I saw it, and I knew I had to paint it!
The event was new to me. So, I marked my calendar to attend the 2018 Philly Naked Bike Ride on September 8, 2018. The event is quite amazing. All these naked and semi-naked folks riding their bikes from Fairmount Park into Center City!
The Philly Naked Bike Ride is just one of many that are part of the World Naked Bike Ride movement. The first international naked bike ride was a collaboration between the World Naked Bike Ride group, which rode on the twelfth of June 2004, and the Manifestación Ciclonudista with its event on the nineteenth. The WNBR group is a creation by Conrad Schmidt to help coordinate a large international naked bike ride between many different activist groups across the world.
The focal point of this painting is the bum of the rider with the PNBR Liberty Bell . It makes me smile, it is an unusual moment in time, all these naked people on bikes, with body paint and backpacks! My guess is most of the folks are pretty courageous and have their own reasons for participating.
Also, can you see the two people hanging out the window? I highlighted the people hanging out the window with with a pink circle on one of the photos in the work-progress photo gallery.
I had to paint this painting. I had to share it. Please enjoy it as much as I enjoy creating it. Let me know your thoughts!
