The Story of Wall Sitting
The road bikers sitting on the wall in this painting are enjoying a casual rest on a warm summer afternoon at Rittenhouse Square Park in Philadelphia. I always look for a story to paint and this day the road bikers caught my attention as they chatted away while hanging out on the wall. The bikers appear to be the main subject, but I really painted this composition with the balustrade wall as my inspiration.
Wall sitting in Rittenhouse Square Park is a time-honored tradition for generations of visitors to the park. For a short time in January 2017, a rule was passed that prohibited wall sitting in the park. No Sitting signs were posted and the Philly police kindly reminded folks not to sit on the wall. The public response to the wall sitting ban was outrage! Sit-ins were organized, dozens of parkgoers protested and within a few days the ban was lifted! Yay!
Public parks are meeting places for folks from all different ages and backgrounds to hang out and relax. The road bikers seen in this painting embody the purpose and mission of public parks. My two road bikers render an easy-going, time-out from the hustle-bustle chaos of city streets.
I hope you vicariously experience a few moments of “chill” while viewing this painting. While making this painting, the at-rest road bikes and bikers reminded me of how nice it is to just sometimes do nothing but sit on a wall!
I hope you experience this simple moment in time and enjoy the painting as much as I enjoyed creating it!
I take every step to ensure the image is as accurate as possible to the original painting. However variations in color may occur due to monitor differences.
