The Story of the Blue-eyed Boy

Reading Terminal Market in Center City Philadelphia is one of the oldest and largest indoor farmer's food markets in the nation. A nationally know foodie paradise, it is home to a wide variety of fresh produce, seafood, poultry, fresh meats, home-baked pastries, Amish specialties, local Pennsylvania Dutch delicacies, and uniquely Philly hoagie and cheesesteak vendors. The blue-eyed boy in this painting is a young and knowledgable member of his family's Pennsylvania Dutch food stand's team. I loved the way he is engulfed by the colorful rainbow of glass jars, packages of popping corn, soup mixes, and all kinds of dried delicacies. The impactful blue of his shirt is matched only by the intensity of his blue eyes. I was taken not only by the cornucopia of colors represented in the painting, but how the boy and his family's food stand exemplifies the down-to-earth atmosphere of the entire market.

Quality food markets are rare these days. Located, not in the suburbs, but in the middle of our great city of Philadelphia, the Terminal Market provides a variety of fresh food and vegetables that are easily accessible to neighborhoods located throughout the city. From artisanal cheeses to classic scrapple and pork chops, the Reading Terminal Market has food and products to meet a wide variety of tastes and budgets.

I hope you vicariously experience the earthy sites, colors, and sounds of the market and can imagine the diversity of folks & food under one roof. This public market is a literal and visual feast for all to enjoy.

THIS PAINTING WAS FEATURED AT THE 155TH SMALL OILS EXHIBIT AT THE PHILADELPHIA SKETCH CLUB.

I hope you experience the joy and tradition of America's oldest farmers' market with this painting as much as I enjoyed creating it!

I take every step to ensure this online image is as accurate as possible to the original painting. However variations in color may occur due to monitor differences.
