“Kamala Harris”

Kamala Harris is No. 14 in my “Women Who Shatter Barriers.” Portrait Series.

The moment her name was announced as 2020 Vice Presidential running mate for Joe Biden. I could not resist making her portrait for my “Women” Series.”

Kamala’s motto, “ YOU MAY BE THE FIRST TO DO MANY THINGS, BUT MAKE SURE YOU’RE NOT THE LAST.” is from her mom.

Kamala is indeed first at many things:

• The first Black woman to be elected district attorney in California history

• The first woman to be California’s attorney general

• The first Indian American senator

• And now, the first Black woman and first Asian American to be picked as a vice presidential running mate on a major-party ticket.

The saying from Kamala’s mom is perfect. It communicates the magnitude and responsibility of being “The First.”

I hope you find this painting joyful, hopeful, along with a bit of outrage that it has taken this long to anoint a woman of color as a Vice Presidential candidate.

In case you haven’t heard it correctly - Kamala’s name is pronounced… "COMMA-luh"
