The Story of “Women Who Shatter Barriers”
As 2018 evolved each day into greater awareness of women and their role in society, I became inspired to create my "Women Who Shatter Barriers" series.
So many bold women. I have a long list of portraits to paint! I never have a shortage of subjects to paint as I continue to create oil painting & collage portraits of women I admire for their courage, brilliance, and heart.
"Misty & Romeo & Juliet" was the first of the series.
Misty Copeland shatters barriers - race, artistry, strength, tradition.
On June 30, 2015, Misty became the first African American Female Principal Dancer in the prestigious American Ballet Theatre's 75-year history. She is a tour-de-force, ground-breaking woman who continues to inspire young girls and women of all ages.
I began my series with Misty because she is young and courageous. My hope is that young girls and women see themselves in her and see proof that beauty and talent come from within, despite the traditional boundaries cemented in the past.

My Multi-media Process
"Misty's" background is a page of sheet music from the ballet "Romeo & Juliet" layered with color and texture. I create the background image digitally with photoshop. I then print, adhere, and prime the background on a 8x10 inch canvas panel. I paint the subject of the portrait with oil paint over the primed background.
I use the highest quality artist oil paint. The original multi-media painting arrives at your home framed and ready to hang.
I take every step to ensure the image is as accurate as possible to the original painting. However variations in color may occur due to monitor differences.
