“Tomatoes From My Parent’s Garden”

“Tomatoes From My Parents Garden.” Oil on canvas panel. 12x16inches. while Growing up in an Italian American household - August meant ONE THING...TOMATOES!! We grew the tomatoes in the garden, canned them and when we ran out of garden tomatoes, went to the local farms and bought bushels more of them. I was not fond of August. I hated that whole tomato canning process. However, now as an adult, I look back with a weird kind of fondness on how my mom and her sister, and my grandmothers would compare notes on how many jars of tomatoes they canned. The tomatoes in my painting are from my parent’s 2020 garden. I snapped a bunch of reference photos last week. The tomatoes are sweet and beautiful. My mom no longer cans the tomatoes but my parents still grow them each year. This was a tedious painting. I’m not really good with foliage and trying to get those vines to make sense was grueling!!! But I am happy with it cuz - well garden tomatoes are still a big thing for me!

I hope this painting inspires you to think about summer and the simple pleasures of enjoying a tomato fresh off its vine.
