The Story of “Walking on a Sunday Afternoon.”

Philly folks may recognize the setting of this painting at the entrance of the magnificent Academy of Music theater located at Broad & Locust Streets. The day was a beautiful afternoon in February of 2018. I knew I had to paint this dad and daughter but it took me a year to get it composed in my head!

“Walking on a Sunday Afternoon” revisits the Father & Child theme from my previous “Waiting at Suburban Station” painting. I really love Philadelphia and I love this city scene. Folks walking down the street past the Academy as a Sunday matinee performance is soon to begin. Folks are gathering on the steps, on the sidewalk, and all around. A moment in time that is not complicated nor loud nor big nor boisterous. Just a dad and his daughter...walking on a Sunday afternoon in the city.

My inspiration and the focal point of this painting is the dad and daughter holding hands. It makes me smile, it is a simple and uncluttered moment in time. A dad and his daughter walking, hands entwined, down a busy city street.

I worked and reworked the composition of this painting so that the sidewalk and steps converged with the dad and daughter. And, at the same time I really wanted to make sure the lanterns of the Academy were included in the composition. The lanterns are beautiful and iconic and to me symbolize the flicker of light and hope represented in the dad and the daughter.

I hope you can sense the beauty and simplicity of this setting. I had to paint it. I had to share it. Please enjoy it as much as I enjoy creating it. Let me know your thoughts!
